Lights on: Ongwediva Town Council boosts residential safety
In an effort to enhance safety and security for its residents, the Ongwediva Town Council has launched an N$800 000 project to install high mast lights in Onawa and Okandjengedi.
Council spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge announced on Monday that a contractor has been appointed and the site has been handed over for work to commence.
Shingenge explained that the project aims to enhance public safety, addressing concerns raised during public meetings about poorly lit streets at night.
Residents highlighted that criminals exploit the lack of light to hide and rob residents. S
Singenge added that the new lights will improve visibility and also enhance the local landscape's aesthetic appeal.
“This initiative is responding to the government's call and vision of bringing services closer to the people and subsequently to Ongwediva Council's strategic plan, which is in alignment with the Local Authorities Act."
The project is scheduled for completion on 14 February 2025.
Shingenge reaffirmed the council’s commitment to improving residents’ livelihoods, pledging to continue delivering essential services and facilities with the aim of fostering the town’s growth.
