Land allocated for new Rundu hospital

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare last Friday visited ongoing projects in Rundu, where he welcomed the Shambyu Traditional Authority’s allocation of over 30 hectares at Kayengona, approximately 10 km outside the town, for the construction of a new intermediate hospital.

The facility is expected to ease pressure on the overcrowded Rundu Intermediate Hospital, which currently serves not only Kavango East and Kavango West but also Zambezi and patients from neighbouring Angola.

Kavango East health director Idah Mendai explained that the current hospital, upgraded from a district to an intermediate facility, operates beyond capacity due to population growth and the extended catchment area.

“Services are currently merged because of space, and with nearly 118 000 people in Rundu alone, we can no longer host everyone in the existing hospital,” Mendai said.

She added that the new land will allow the construction of a fully-fledged intermediate hospital, while the current facility will revert to serving as a district hospital.

“This is good news. Angola also relies on some of our services, so it’s essential we expand and properly plan for future needs,” Mendai said.

Planning and logistical preparations will begin immediately, with submissions to the Ministry of Health to guide budgeting and feasibility studies ahead of construction.
