Winning the Debmarine Namibia Premiership in their first season is not on the agenda for the Khomas Nampol Football Club, but they intend to fight for survival with an early win in the season already under their belts.

Their debut in top-flight football was not a babtism of fire as many might have predicted after the police team secured a 2-0 victory over Young Brazilians in Keetmanshoop.

The club that won last year’s Southern Stream First Division may be new to the premier league but has a horde of experienced premier league players, including coach Fortune Eichab.

Battle for survival

Eichab, who took charge of the team and helped it gain promotion, is well aware of how difficult league football can get.

"I think winning the first match was important for us, even if it did not come that easily.

"At this moment, we have no wild dreams about title ambitions, but we can just hope for survival.

"The players know the plan, and we will make sure that we fight this season," Eichab said.

At the moment, the important thing for Khomas Nampol is that they have already secured three points on the table.

It remains to be seen whether the team has what it takes to pull off more upsets and survive relegation this season.

Big task ahead

Travelling to Keetmanshoop and returning with three points may have seemed like a mammoth task.

The club’s stealth and quality test is, however, expected to take place when they confront two of Windhoek’s famous clubs next weekend.

Khomas Nampol are set to battle Tigers and Civics after the league break.

"I think these matches will be personal, especially the match between us and Tigers FC.

"We took their captain and vice as well as some of their coaching staff.

"All this will surely make it an emotional match and can be one like a derby.

"We have enough time to prepare the players and ensure that they are ready for the two fixtures," Eichab noted.
