Katima renames streets to honour national icons

The Katima Mulilo Town Council has renamed three streets in honour of prominent Namibian figures.

The streets were renamed in honour of former health minister Dr Richard Kamwi, retired judge Sylvester Mainga and former Miss Namibia Happie Ntelamo.

Mayor Kabende Kabende told Namibian Sun the initiative forms part of an ongoing effort to ensure public spaces and infrastructure reflect the values, history and aspirations of modern Namibian society.

The mayor dismissed claims linking the initiative to proposals made by political activist and academic Job Amupanda, who took to social media thanking the town council for renaming streets following his proposal.

Kabende clarified that Amupanda’s proposal had been submitted to the previous council and not the current administration.

“We basically made this decision as council, but I was surprised to see communication being circulated in a way that implied it was a proposal from the professor,” Kabende said.

Good works recognised

The mayor said the renaming exercise was guided by the principle of associating public institutions and community spaces with individuals whose work reflects the purpose and significance of those areas.

The former Hospital Road has now been renamed after Dr Richard Kamwi due to its proximity to the district hospital.

“It is correct to align the name of that street with a person who dedicated his career to improving the healthcare system in the country,” Kabende said.

The street situated near the regional court has been renamed after retired Judge Sylvester Mainga.

“Naming that street after the retired judge is a fitting recognition of his contribution to the legal system and the role he played in strengthening justice and governance.”

The third street, located near Grimo Matongo Primary School, now carries the name of former Miss Namibia Happie Ntelamo.

“She achieved on a national platform while still very young,” Kabende said.

Kabende said street naming is a continuous exercise.

“Anybody who has done civic duty and contributed positively to the community or the country deserves recognition.”
