Kashi spreads hope
Karibib Self-Help Initiative (Kashi), a non-profit welfare organisation, caters for about 30 children.
Founded in January, the initiative aims to engage in social welfare activities and create sustainable development projects that will create employment for its members and beneficiaries while addressing social challenges in the community of Karibib.
According to founder Raymond Tjiuongua, the name was chosen because they do not want to constantly rely on donations.
"We want to initiate sustainable development projects that will solve social problems in addition to creating employment and training members of our community. We have occasional soup kitchens to feed vulnerable children in the informal settlements. We have currently partnered with Karibib Private School, with whom we will host a donation day and soup kitchen on 23 September."
Tjiuongua added that Kashi is a community-based organisation that was founded on the principles of social justice.
"We are based in Karibib and currently operate from the premises of a sister institution as well as at members' homes. We are currently in need of our own land and building from where we wish to operate and establish our projects. Monetary donations received will be channelled towards the acquisition of our broadcasting licence and payment of other mandatory registration fees."
Time and space
"Due to the lack of funds and the unemployment status of all members, no monetary investments have been made. However, our members invest their valued time and space in the activities of Kashi," Tjiuongua said.
The initiative is currently working towards the establishment of Karibib Community Radio as well as a brick-making project that will support the construction of a community centre and supply cheaper bricks to residents in the Harambee and Usab informal settlements, he said.
Tjiuongua assured that locals will receive much-needed training and employment opportunities through Kashi's activities and established projects.
"Since this is a community-based organisation, no one is excluded from joining Kashi. In fact, we motivate all community members, especially the youth, to join as volunteers and ultimately benefit from projects and training."
