The FS Meteor, a multidisciplinary research vessel owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, docked at the port of Walvis Bay on Monday for a scheduled visit.

The floating laboratory, which was constructed in 1986, operates mainly in high sea areas of the Atlantic, the eastern Pacific, the western Indian Oceans as well as the Mediterranean and Baltic seas.

According to the German embassy in Windhoek's deputy head of mission, Andreas Gotze, the vessel has been carrying out research in Namibian and Angolan waters for more than 10 years.

The cruises of the Meteor include capacity-building components for scientists, graduates and undergraduate students from Namibian and Angolan project partner institutes such as the National Marine Information and Research Centre, the University of Namibia and the ministry of fisheries and marine resources.

Gotze added that the most recent cruises M187 and M189 took place from January to March and from April to May respectively.
