IPC councillor gets free plot at Oshakati
Another relocation campaign kicks off
In 2019, the Oshakati town council embarked on its first relocation campaign which saw over 300 people from Sky and Eemwandi locations moved to Onawa.
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) councillor for Oshakati, Jerobeam Ndaamohamba, is amongst 800 people currently being relocated by the town council to the Onawa area.
Council on Tuesday kicked off the relocation of the Kalaula residents, and once completed, they are expected to relocate the residents of Oshaimbangu Solar Plant location as well.
The first phase of the Oshoopola relocation will commence on 31 May.
In 2019, the Oshakati town council embarked on its first relocation campaign which saw over 300 people from Sky and Eemwandi locations moved to Onawa.
Ndaamohamba, who has been living in the Kalaula informal area for about four years, said the relocation came at the right time.
“I have indeed suffered for a long time. I am really happy that we are part of the council's developmental agenda,” he said.
Paving the way for development
Mayor Leonard Hango said 800 people are expected to be relocated to Onawa in order to pave the way for development in their current areas. Once completely moved, the council will construct six temporary public toilets to be used by the relocated residents at Onawa, he said.
“Onawa is currently semi-serviced, with no sewerage lines. However, council is in the process of securing funds for construction of a sewer treatment plant and sewerage lines.”
Hango added residents will receive planned, surveyed and properly demarcated erven, and will also be required to pay a minimum of N$500 as a water connection fee as well as N$300 as a water deposit.
These are discounted fees, the mayor said, adding that the usual connection fees total N$2 820.
For this process to be completed smoothly, close to 100 youths were temporarily employed for the dismantling of zinc structures and their reconstruction at Onawa. This, Hango, said done for council to avoid outsourcing work from private companies which charge exorbitant prices.
Others have been employed to dig pipes and connect these pipes to the water system.
