Iipumbu urges Namibians to preserve culture amid Western influence

Tuyeimo Haidula
Uukwambi chief Herman Ndilimani Iipumbu has urged Namibians to safeguard their cultural heritage, warning that Western influences are eroding traditional values, languages and customs.

Speaking at the official opening of the annual University of Namibia (Unam) cultural festival at the Oshakati campus last week, Iipumbu called for the restoration of indigenous practices to protect the nation’s diverse identity for future generations.

He appealed to young Namibians to embrace their roots and proposed that cultural practices be formally documented for use in schools.

“We need our cultures to be written... so our children do not forget their roots,” he advised, noting that culture goes beyond dances and storytelling to include naming traditions, weaving techniques and daily ways of living.

In a speech read on his behalf, Unam vice chancellor Kenneth Matengu said cultural festivals play a vital role in breaking down stereotypes, fostering unity and building resilient communities.

"In a world increasingly shaped by globalisation and interconnectedness, these values are not optional but are essential. Cultural understanding leads not only to stronger friendships and peaceful coexistence but also to more innovative ideas, more compassionate communities and more effective solutions to the challenges we face as a nation and global citizens," Matengu said.

He added that cultural understanding strengthens relationships, promotes peaceful coexistence, and inspires innovative solutions to societal challenges.

The festival, which began on Wednesday, ended on Sunday.
