The justice and labour relations ministry has launched an investigation into whether Namibia’s poultry breeding, hatchery, broiler and abattoir services should be classified as essential under the Labour Act, 2007.

In a public notice issued on Monday, 20 October, the ministry’s Essential Services Committee said it is considering the designation to ensure continuous operation of vital food production services.

If approved, the classification would restrict workers in these sectors from striking according to the Labour Act, as essential services are defined as those necessary to protect the life, health or safety of the population.

Interested parties have until 29 October to submit written comments to the ministry’s division of international relations and advice.

Submissions should be addressed to Johannes Matsi at the ministry’s offices at 32 Mercedes Street, Khomasdal, Windhoek, or via email at [email protected].

A public hearing will be held on 3 November at 09:00 in the ministerial conference hall at the same address, where stakeholders can present oral representations.

The investigation forms part of ongoing efforts by the government to safeguard key sectors in Namibia’s food production chain and maintain national food security amid rising labour concerns.
