President Hage Geingob says opposition parties have failed to run the Windhoek municipality, yet want to rule the entire country. He was speaking during the official opening of the Swapo Party Youth League’s seventh congress at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region recently.
Opposition parties are expelling each other left and right, and endlessly fighting amongst themselves, he said.
Swapo lost control of Windhoek after the 2020 local authority election, which allowed a coalition of opposition parties, describing themselves as ‘progressive forces’, to take over the capital.
But it has been a bumpy ride for the opposition, with a recent vote of no confidence passed against members of the management committee, which is dominated by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC).
‘Don’t fool yourself’
Four IPC councillors filed an urgent application in the Windhoek High Court, seeking an interdict against plans to recall them from the committee, but the court dismissed their application.
The motion of no confidence was brought by Affirmative Repositioning (AR) councillor Ilse Keister.
Geingob said: “I was telling my colleagues ‘let them lead, you will see in six months!’ Look at them now. You can’t run a municipality, but you want to run a country? Don’t fool yourself”.
The president also took a swipe at people who drink alcohol, saying one cannot be a drunkard and expect to run the country or to lead people.
“You cannot be an alcoholic, a drug dealer and a woman abuser and think you can be a leader,” he said.
