Family protests bail for murder accused
The family of Martha Aron, a 35-year-old woman who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend in September 2024, protested outside the Ondangwa Magistrate\'s Court on Tuesday, demanding that the accused be denied bail.
According to family members, Aron was murdered in cold blood after she ended her relationship.
"We saw our sister killed in cold blood in front of our eyes. in broad daylight, and other family members were also present. He did this on purpose," Soini Aron, a relative, claimed during the protest.
Aron was allegedly stabbed last year by her boyfriend, taxi driver Eliakim Taapopi Shiimi (40), at the cuca shops in Oshifukwa village, Oshikoto region.
Police at the time reported that the teacher was killed after ending her 11-month relationship.
During Tuesday’s protest, Soini said they were demanding justice and answers over the killing of their beloved daughter, mother, sister, cousin, aunt and friend.
"We are pleading with the court of law to do justice on this matter and not to grant bail to the suspect," she said.
Court proceedings
Magistrate Nelao Ya France on Tuesday postponed the bail hearing to Wednesday to allow State prosecutor Justine Shiweda to conduct cross-examination.
During proceedings, Shiimi said he wanted to be granted bail so that he could assist his two children, his mother and his nieces, who depend on him as the family’s sole breadwinner.
He told the court he could only afford N$2 000 for bail, with assistance from relatives.
Asked what he would say to the family members who attended the court proceedings in large numbers, he replied: “I just want to apologise to them.”
Shiimi also told the court that he had the intention to hand himself over after he committed the crime, so he will not abscond. He said he owns eight donkeys and 15 goats and will continue to care for his livestock once released from custody.
Shiimi was represented by Samuel Edegware from Shikongo Law Chambers.
