Ex-footballer's recording reveals turmoil before suicide

A football coach and former Brave Warriors player laid bare profound emotional distress and marital conflict in an audio recording capturing thoughts many now believe were recorded shortly before his death.The recording, an extended personal monologue, depicts a man wrestling with feelings of mistrust and emotional exhaustion.Throughout, he repeatedly returned to what he regarded as the central problem in his marriage: a loss of mutual respect.Namibian Sun is not naming him out of consideration for his grieving family."Marriage can be made by respect, not by love, not by money, not by material things, but by respect," he says in the recording. "But you don't have even a minus one percent respect for me.”He also laments what he saw as an inability to communicate openly with his spouse."There's no instance that you will be quiet when I talk, just to listen to what I'm talking and then maybe say something," he says.As the recording progresses, the former footballer alternates between anger, frustration and resignation as he reflects on a relationship he believed had become increasingly strained. "And that is where these problems are starting," he says.He also speaks about the impact of the marital difficulties on his professional life, saying the situation had become a source of embarrassment."I am working here embarrassingly," he says. "I want to move on. I want a better wife, a wife that must listen to me."At several points, he alleges that rumours of infidelity deepened tensions in the relationship.The recording repeatedly returns to issues of authority, expectations and different views about the nature of the marriage. He suggests that conflicts emerged when, in his view, agreed boundaries were no longer respected."But then you go in the comfort zone where you start deciding, I will do whatever I want ... and that causes problems," he says.Falling apartThe former defender, who played for Chief Santos and Eleven Arrows during his career, also raises concerns about financial pressures and household responsibilities."Do you know that the N$2 000 is the salary of some of the people in these 10 years that we are together?" he asks."How many accounts do we have outside that I'm standing now and settling because I want to do my next part in my life?"As the monologue continues, his frustration becomes increasingly direct. He accuses his spouse of failing to work with him to resolve their differences and suggests reconciliation was unlikely. "If you cannot be wife enough, perform your wifely duties and compete with me, then how can I accommodate such a person here next to me?"The recording also reveals a man attempting to explain the emotional toll the relationship had taken on him. "Your manners, your attitude are chasing you away from me,” he says. "If you want to go back, you go back yourself. I will not take you back because I am not in there for a divorce.”He also suggests involving relatives in the dispute, stating: "I will forward it to your mother so your mother can know my direct words."According to figures presented during a health ministry and World Health Organisation (WHO) media dialogue workshop last year, 1 474 Namibians died by suicide over a three-year period.
