Dependent women trapped in abusive relationships – PM
News in short
Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila says government is hard at work to empower women so that they do not remain trapped in abusive relationships.
Speaking at a Human Rights Day event held in Rundu last week, she said once women are empowered and become independent, they are more likely to walk away from abusive relationships.
“Empower them to make their own income and they will be able to leave abusive relationships and men will not be entitled to abuse their wives because they think they own them,” she said.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila also spoke about the Married Persons Equality Act, which she said guarantees equality within marriages, ending the previous discriminatory system that limited the rights and freedoms of women in marriage.
The prime minister further said the application of affirmative action in public service has led to an increase in employment of previously disadvantaged persons, who - as at 2021 - accounted for 98.3% of the government workforce.
