Corruption- accused govt official granted bail

An environment ministry employee, who stands accused of corruption, was granted N$3 000 bail after he made his first appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Johannes Haufiku (40) appeared before Magistrate Sonia Samupofu, who postponed the case to 25 April pending a prosecutor-general decision on whether to prosecute or not.
“In case of failure to appear in court, a warrant of arrest may be issued against you and your bail will provisionally be cancelled and forfeited to the state,” she warned the accused.
Haufiku elected to conduct his own defence.
According to the acting commander for the Kavango East Region, Deputy Commissioner Eino Nambahu, Samupofu was arrested last week in Rundu’s Tuhingireni informal settlement.
“The accused was found using a state vehicle to transport 50-kilogram bags of animal feed from a private dwelling in Sauyemwa without an official permit,” he said. “It was further alleged that the suspect was taking the feed to his farm at Karukuhwisa, but was intercepted by an undercover police officer.”
A total of 39 bags of animal feed and the vehicle were seized.
Nambahu warned drivers of official vehicles to desist from abusing government vehicles.
“Our undercover operatives are on the ground to observe this kind of practices and whoever is observed doing that will be brought to order through the court of law.”
