Correctional service receives new storage facility
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Natangue Ithète, officially handed over a storage facility provided by the Namibia Industrial Development Agency (NIDA) to the Namibia Correctional Service today at Ngweze, Katima Mulilo.
The facility aims to strengthen food security, support offender rehabilitation, and contribute to sustainable development.
This follows NIDA’s initiative to reduce dependency on food imports.
Ithète said that the handover aligns with Namibia’s Vision 2030, National Development Plan 6, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
He also said the storage facility will improve food preservation, stock management, and nutrition within correctional facilities, while creating potential surplus supplies to support surrounding communities.
He further emphasised the link between food security and industrialisation, noting that secure food systems provide raw materials for industries such as milling, packaging, and food processing, creating jobs and stimulating rural economies.
Ithète commended NIDA for the facility and the Correctional Service for adopting progressive strategies that combine rehabilitation and national development.
