City eyes 20 more buses

Windhoek plans to expand its municipal bus service by acquiring 20 new buses, while exploring greener operations that include the introduction of electric buses.The plans remain heavily dependent on securing a sustainable funding mechanism, City of Windhoek chief executive officer Moses Matyayi has said.In an interview with Namibian Sun, Matyayi said the City wants to rebuild and expand its municipal bus service, with a focus on improving fleet availability, maintenance and service coverage.“The longer-term objective is a reliable public transport network serving communities across Windhoek, particularly residents without access to private vehicles,” Matyayi said.He said the projects are capital-intensive and depend on securing funding and continued engagement with government.“Discussions are at an advanced stage [with central government] with certain commitments already made,” Matyayi said.“Although a formal funding agreement has not yet been concluded, the City remains committed to working closely with the relevant authorities to secure the necessary support and establish a clear pathway towards implementation,” he added.Improving routesBeyond acquiring additional buses, the City is also planning public transport facilities and interchanges to improve connectivity between different modes of transport.These include a proposed primary interchange in Windhoek’s central business district, which would integrate municipal buses, taxis and long-distance passenger transport, while making provision for future rail connectivity.Expansion of bus routes is also on the cards, with a comprehensive review underway.“This process includes assessing existing routes and schedules, identifying underserved communities and exploring opportunities to progressively expand the reach of the municipal bus service,” Matyayi said.
