Chinese ambassador pays a visit to Usakos and Karibib

The Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, visited Usakos and Karibib recently with the aim of assessing the towns’ economic landscapes and establishing friendly relations with residents.

Zhao was accompanied by counsellor Wei Jinming during the official visit to the two towns in the Erongo Region.

During the visit, Ambassador Zhao was keen to learn about the social and economic development of the two towns and had discussions with Usakos mayor Irene Simeon-Kurtz as well as Karibib mayor Davey Van Wyk.

The ambassador also visited communal facilities in Usakos and Ebenhaeser School in Karibib.

Opportunities for modernisation

The small town of Usakos has 3 000 inhabitants and sufficient land available for further development and modernisation.

Zhao said the embassy was keen to assess Usakos's major economic sectors.

"We are interested in commercial activities in Usakos, minerals and resources, historical buildings, education, farming and agriculture. The aim is to invest in the modernisation of the town."

Usakos mayor Simeon-Kurtz said she is looking forward to more visits of this nature.

"Going forward, we want to see more initiatives like these. The Usakos town counsel is ready to provide cooperation in this regard. Our government's friendship with the People's Republic of China is one that is deep-rooted," she said.

"Our strategic partnership with China has now matured and features mutual respect, mutual benefits, and mutual development."
