Charity shop pops up in Bethanie

On Sunday, the EM Love Foundation and St. Paul's College set up a charity pop-up shop in a community hall in Bethanie to give residents a chance to ‘shop till you drop' for free.

According to the foundation's founder, Mavis Elias, the Namibia Street Store aims to create a shopping experience for remote communities in need.

"It reexamines traditional donations, where goods were donated without the beneficiary being able to decide what their preference is. Through the Namibia Street Store, beneficiaries browse through a makeshift pop-up store and choose the items of their liking, ranging from shoes, shirts, jerseys, and trousers," she explained in a statement issued this week.

"Creating the ultimate shopping experience coupled with a meal and entertainment."

Hope for Bethanie

Bethanie, with an estimated population of 2 000 people, is situated 141 km from Keetmanshoop.

Just over 310 residents benefitted from the charity initiative.

Residents received a warm meal delivered by the foundation and its partners after choosing items from the shop.

"The EM Love Foundation remains grateful to the Bethanie community for showing great support to enable the execution of the Bethanie Street Store. We too are grateful for the continuous support received from St. Paul's College and Readi Bites," Elias said.

The street store idea originated in Cape Town and plans are underway to spread the pop-up stores across Namibia.
