Cattle marketing drops below 16 000 in July

Cattle marketing declined by 60.94% year-on-year, from 40 732 cattle marketed in July last year to 15 912 this year.The Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia’s (LLPB) Market Watch Report for August further noted that live exports were 73.1% lower than in July 2024.
The report stated that the South African market absorbed the majority of cattle exports (99.01%), followed by smaller volumes to Zimbabwe (0.66%) and Botswana (0.33%).
In the sheep sector, marketing decreased by 45.43%, from 85 853 sheep marketed in July 2024 to 46 847 in July this year.
The LLPB reported that live sheep exports decreased by 49.67% year-on-year.
Export abattoir performance fell by 15.06% over the same period, while B and C class abattoir slaughtering dropped by 35.80%, from 8 682 sheep in July last year to 5 574 this year.
Small livestock
The majority of live sheep exports (98.63%) went to South Africa, followed by Zambia (0.91%), Botswana (0.18%), Tanzania (0.18%), Angola (0.05%) and Zimbabwe (0.05%).
In the goat sector, the LLPB stated that total marketing declined by 21.92%, from 15 654 goats in July 2024 to 12 223 marketed this year.
During the period under review, 12 219 goats were exported live, compared to 15 517 in July 2024, representing a year-on-year decrease of 21.25% but an 11.58% increase on a monthly basis.
Exports to South Africa accounted for 95.25% of total live goat exports, followed by Zimbabwe (1.95%), Angola (1.76%), Tanzania (0.53%) and Botswana (0.51%).
In July, 4 174 pigs were slaughtered, marking a year-on-year decrease of 1.32%.
No live pigs were exported during the review period.
During this time, the Mariental abattoir slaughtered 2 363 pigs, while Halooli abattoir slaughtered 1 556.
