The Capricorn Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting hunger and malnutrition in Namibia with a total investment of N$2 million.

Of this, N$600 000 will go to the Gondwana MealForTwo Programme to support nutritional meals nationwide, while N$1.4 million has been pledged to Genesis Namibia for malnutrition relief in the Omaheke region.

According to the UN World Food Programme, nearly half of Namibia’s population is facing severe food insecurity due to prolonged drought, economic decline, unemployment and rising living costs.

Through its long-standing partnership with the Gondwana Care Trust, the foundation’s support will enable the distribution of 400 000 meals to 30 organisations – including orphanages, kindergartens, school hostels and nursing homes. The MealForTwo Programme has delivered over 1.6 million meals since 2017.

Nutrition support

In Omaheke, the foundation initially supported a six-month pilot project with Genesis Namibia, providing 67 000 meals to more than 700 children and adults across eight soup kitchens.

Following its success, an additional N$849 540 has been committed to reach 1 000 malnourished children.

“Together with our partners, we are not just delivering meals, we are delivering hope and dignity,” said Riaan van Zyl, managing director of Genesis Namibia.

Capricorn emphasised its goal of engaging with government, partners and communities to ensure targeted and sustainable impact. A recent site visit to Genesis-supported soup kitchens in Gobabis will inform further action in the region.
