Lüderitz residents want a permanent roadblock at the town’s entry and exit points to curb the flow of drugs and other illicit substances.“We propose that a security checkpoint be put up to monitor and search vehicles suspected of transporting illegal substances," community members suggested in a petition submitted to the police on Saturday. This measure, they believe, will help "disrupt drug trafficking routes and protect our town from illegal inflow." Around 200 black-clad community members marched to the police station on Saturday, demanding justice for 74-year-old Granny Frieda Ngwedha, who died in January after being assaulted and robbed in December.They handed a petition to Namibian Police Senior Inspector Paulus Kaferandu, the crime prevention unit commander, who promised a swift response.“We demand justice for Kuku Frieda Kaunapawa Ngwedha. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done," organiser Ndeshipanda Akwenye said. "We are not here to create conflict. We are here to protect lives, restore safety, and defend the future of our community,” Akwenye added.Akwenye said the deadly robbery reflects the growing violence linked to drug abuse and addiction. “Innocent civilians are increasingly becoming victims of attacks committed by individuals seeking to sustain drug habits. We want a thorough investigation to be conducted that will lead to the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible.” Moral duty The community also called for the enforcement of age restrictions in bars and at drinking establishments. “Bar owners have a legal and moral responsibility to verify the identification and prevent entry of underage individuals. We must protect minors from exposure to alcohol, drugs, and criminal environments. Non-compliance must result in penalties and possible closure,” the petition states.They further requested that strict warnings and enforcement measures be introduced and enforced for landlords and property owners if drug activities are discovered on rented premises. “Property owners must cooperate with law enforcement. Repeated negligence must result in legal consequences. Landlords must ensure responsible tenancy practices. Community safety must come before profit,” the petition reads.Manpower must increase Community members further demanded the closure of abandoned houses. “These places have become hot spots for drug use and criminal activity. The Lüderitz Town Council must ensure these structures are sealed and secured. Trespassers should be prosecuted, and community partnerships must be put in place to safeguard these spaces,” they suggested.They also called for an increase in law enforcement presence. “Visible law enforcement presence builds deterrence and restores public confidence. We urgently request more manpower on the ground to restore safety and deter criminal activity. If necessary, reinforcement measures similar to those implemented in Keetmanshoop may be considered,” the petition reads. The community members further emphasised that they stand ready to work with authorities, parents and community leaders to build a safer, healthier Lüderitz for present and future generations. “We stand united against drugs, crime and violence. We stand for safety and justice. We refuse to be defined by drugs and crime – we choose hope, unity and a future where every young person in Lüderitz can live, dream and succeed in safety,” they said.
