Berlin mayor en route to Windhoek

The City of Windhoek has confirmed that the governing mayor of Berlin, Dr Kai Wegner, will pay an official visit to Namibia’s capital from 15 to 18 October 2025 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Windhoek-Berlin Sister-City Partnership.The visit marks a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship between the two cities, celebrating a quarter-century of cooperation in governance, youth development, climate action, and cultural exchange.In a statement issued on Tuesday, the City of Windhoek said it was “pleased to welcome Wegner and his delegation”, describing the occasion as “an opportunity to deepen the friendship and cooperation that have defined the partnership since its inception in July 2000”.Wegner will lead a 41-member multi-sectoral delegation, reflecting the broad scope of the partnership, which was established to strengthen municipal collaboration and bilateral relations between Namibia and Germany.Over the years, the two cities have worked together on several initiatives, including governance reform, skills development, support for the informal economy, and cultural programmes aimed at promoting mutual understanding. City officials said the visit’s programme was designed to reinforce these ties and align with Windhoek’s current development priorities.During the four-day visit, Wegner is expected to meet with government leaders, local authorities, and civil society organisations. His itinerary includes official courtesy calls, a public lecture at the University of Namibia, and youth dialogues on entrepreneurship, sustainable energy, and inclusive growth.He will also attend the world premiere of People of Song, an opera celebrating cultural exchange between Windhoek and Berlin, symbolising their shared commitment to reconciliation and creativity.“The partnership is not only a reflection of our shared history but a living platform for innovation and cooperation,” the City said. “This milestone is both commemorative and forward-looking, focusing on building a future grounded in people-centred governance and sustainable urban development.”Since its establishment in 2000, the Windhoek-Berlin Sister-City Partnership has served as a model of international municipal collaboration. “The City of Windhoek looks forward to welcoming Mayor Wegner and his delegation and to further deepening this valued relationship as it enters a new chapter,” the statement concluded.
