The Walvis Bay municipality has granted conditional approval to the Backyard Tenants Group to purchase portion 19 of Farm 37.

The 33-hectare piece of land will be used to create erven for approximately 1 000 residents in the harbour town.

The decision was announced at the municipality's ordinary meeting on 25 July.

The Backyard Tenants Group submitted a petition to the Walvis Bay municipality on February 27, requesting land, whether serviced or unserviced.

According to Walvis Bay Backyard Tenants spokesperson Immanuel YaFestus, the group mobilised funds to service such land and build something to call home.

"We are that group that said we are going to do fundraising every month to fund our project. We are the group that attempted to camp at extensions 10 and 11 of farm 37 on 16 June, because of the delays thereto. We are that group that later applied to purchase land at Farm 37."

Teamwork

Based on the conditions set by the council, the group was required to formalise itself.

"We invited all those who took part in the petition held on 27 February and / or supported the petition. Those who formed part of Backyard Tenants Group showed interest in continuing with the fight by contributing a N$100 non-refundable fee towards our administration, activating such members in our database, and formalising our membership database,” YaFestus said.

"We want to commend the leadership of the council, under the leadership of his worship, the mayor Trevino Forbes and deputy mayor Lucia Kuutondokwa, who understood us and fought for us tirelessly in our presence at the,” he added.

He said 334 members contributed to renting an office for the group.

Way forward

Each member contributed N$100, and thanks to that, we can afford to pay rent and buy office equipment, including a computer and printer. We are going to do as much fundraising as possible. We plan to occupy our serviced plots no later than 30 September 2025."

He confirmed they are in the process of registering as a non-profit organisation.

He explained that members will have to contribute N$380 every month for a period of two years, "and we deem such as sufficient enough to service a plot."

YaFestus added that the party will host fundraisers to raise funds for servicing the land.

"To achieve our target without unnecessary hindrance, we need funds,” he said.
