Amushelelo puts activism on pause

Iréne-Mari van der Walt
Activist Michael Amushelelo announced through his platforms that he will no longer act as an activist for an indefinite period of time, but will instead focus on "rebuilding" his life.

In a post on his platforms, Amushelelo said that he receives almost 500 calls daily and does not have an assistant to help him. "It’s difficult to help people who are not willing to do the bare minimum for the individual helping them," Amushelelo said in the post.

The activist said he is "emotionally exhausted." "Every morning I need to wake up and be strong for myself and at the same time strong for others in order to be their voice," he says.

He says this decision was made after his mother regularly encouraged him to focus on his own life. "... Mommy I have listened to you. Sorry for all the sleepless nights I have put you through, you can now sleep peacefully," he says.
