Aakwanyama ethnic group Namibia's largest
Statistician general Alex Shimuafeni says the Aakwanyama ethnic group accounts for the largest population, at 21.3%, followed by Aandonga (10.3%) and Ovaherero (10.1%), while Aangandeja is the lowest at 3.4%. Speaking at the release of the 2023 Khomas Census Regional Profile in Windhoek, Shimuafeni noted that the region continues to show strong growth compared to others, with Omaheke remaining the least populated at about 132 000. Shimuafeni also revealed that women continue to outnumber men, a pattern that is slightly consistent with national demographics. He said the majority of Khomas residents live in Windhoek, while the smallest settlement hosts around 54 960 people. The region’s population has nearly tripled from 167 991 in 1991 to 494 000 in 2023, a growth rate of about 45%, surpassing the national average.
