SOS Children’s Villages plans community development collaboration

A team from SOS Children’s Villages Namibia paid a courtesy visit to the City of Windhoek to explore potential areas of collaboration in community development. Led by National Director Julieta Ferreira, the team presented the organisation’s ongoing programmes that support vulnerable children by providing a stable family environment, education, healthcare, and developmental support. Discussions centred around a 2021 needs assessment, which identified the Moses Garoeb Constituency, particularly the Havana informal settlement, as highly vulnerable. As a result, the organisation has concentrated its efforts in the area to strengthen community structures that promote positive parenting and child protection. Through this work, the organisation has identified a piece of land it hopes to use to expand its services and has requested the City’s approval to utilise the site. City of Windhoek Chief Executive Officer, Moses Matyayi, highlighted the growing pressure on the City caused by the rapid expansion of informal settlements and continued migration to Windhoek from smaller towns and rural areas, which makes long-term planning increasingly challenging.
