How a tuckshop blossomed into a booming floral business
For Hulda Shipanga, the founder and owner of Hushi Flowers, success did not begin in a flower shop surrounded by roses and lilies.
It began behind the counter of a modest tuckshop, where every sale represented another step towards a much bigger dream.
Today, Shipanga is one of Namibia's trusted florists, creating elegant floral arrangements for weddings, prestigious government functions and state funerals. Yet her journey is a reminder that extraordinary businesses often grow from the most ordinary beginnings.
"I started with a tuckshop," she says. "That business taught me discipline, customer service and how to manage money. Every dollar I could save had a purpose."
Rather than spending her savings elsewhere, Shipanga made a decision that would change the course of her life. She travelled to Johannesburg to enrol in a professional course specialising in wedding and floral arrangements. Armed with new skills, renewed confidence and a clear vision, she returned home, registered her business and began building a reputation one bouquet at a time. Like many entrepreneurs, the early days were not without challenges.
Quality above all
People recognised her as the tuckshop owner, not as a florist. Entering an entirely new industry meant proving herself from scratch while working with limited capital and no established reputation. Instead of allowing those obstacles to define her, Shipanga focused on one thing: she could control the quality of her work.
"Quality is non-negotiable," she explains. "Every arrangement I created had to speak for itself." That commitment to excellence steadily earned the trust of clients, opening doors to opportunities she once only dreamed about. Among her proudest achievements is being entrusted with floral arrangements for national government events and state funerals, occasions that demand professionalism, precision and dignity.
"The first time I stood back and saw my flowers displayed at a high-profile government event, I realised this was no longer just a small business," she recalls. "It was becoming a legacy."
Looking back, Shipanga believes the single most important business decision she ever made was investing in herself.
Saving for professional training instead of immediate comforts transformed both the quality of her work and the opportunities available to her. It is a lesson she now shares with aspiring entrepreneurs.
"Start where you are, with what you have," she advises. "Don't be ashamed of your starting point. Save deliberately, invest in your skills and trust yourself." As her business prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary in August, Shipanga is already focused on the next chapter.
Planting a legacy
She hopes to expand her team and establish a formal floral academy where young people, particularly women, can learn the art and business of floristry. Her ambition is not only to create beautiful arrangements but also to help cultivate the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Beyond that lies an even bigger dream.
One day, Shipanga hopes to own a fully operational greenhouse where she can grow the flowers, roses and plants used in her bouquets. Producing her own flowers would reduce costs, improve sustainability and ensure a consistent supply of premium blooms. Alongside the greenhouse, she envisions opening a florist shop where customers can purchase fresh roses, plants and bespoke floral arrangements directly.
It is a vision rooted in the same determination that first inspired her to save every cent from her tuckshop.
From serving everyday customers behind a small counter to decorating some of the country's most significant occasions, Hulda Shipanga's story is proof that success is rarely an overnight achievement. It grows through perseverance, careful planning, continuous learning and the courage to believe in a dream long before anyone else can see it.
And, much like the flowers she so carefully arranges, her greatest ambitions are still waiting to bloom.
