Seventy-five youths aged between 12 and 18 who had been living on the streets in towns across Namibia completed a five-week rehabilitation and skills development programme at the National Youth Service training centre in Henties Bay last week.

The programme brought together participants from six regions, including Khomas, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Hardap, //Kharas and Omaheke, as part of a rehabilitative, skills-based initiative.

The pilot project aimed to restore dignity, instil discipline, strengthen patriotism and equip participants with essential life skills to support their reintegration into society.

Education minister Sanet Steenkamp on Friday officiated at the closing ceremony of the pilot training programme for children living and working on the streets.

“These positive changes remind us that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the potential to transform their life when given the right support and guidance,” she said.

Steenkamp commended the resilience and determination demonstrated by the young participants throughout the training.

Partnerships for happier children

Implemented in collaboration with the child welfare ministry, the programme provided psychosocial support alongside structured training focused on discipline, teamwork, responsibility and personal development.

Participants also engaged with the Namibian Correctional Service and the Namibian Police Force on crime prevention and substance abuse awareness.

Learners who wish to return to school will be supported through provisions under the Basic Education Act, including access to learning support teams and assistance through the school grant policy.

Further opportunities remain available through higher education subsidies, vocational training and youth entrepreneurship initiatives.
