A Saturday of smiles for Small Valley children

For a few hours on Saturday, children in the Small Valley informal settlement in Okahandja had something different to look forward to: a warm meal, new shoes and clothes, and an afternoon of playing with friends.More than 150 children and their families received food, juice, clothes and shoes during a community outreach initiative led by Jessica Jantjies, founder and principal of Kidzplay Day Care &amp; Preschool in Osona Village.Jantjies, who spends her weekdays teaching young children, dedicated her Saturday to giving back to children in the community. What began as an effort to provide basic necessities turned into an emotional day for her, with the children's reaction leaving a lasting impression.“Honestly, what touched my heart the most was the hope and happiness in their little faces,” she said.According to Jantjies, the children's smiles were a reminder that kindness does not always have to come through grand gestures. A meal, a pair of shoes or a simple act of kindness can make a difference in someone's day.“I may not have everything, but I believe that when God places a desire in your heart to help, you must follow it. It was a reminder that we are blessed to be a blessing,” she said.Teaching compassion for others The outreach also reflected the values Jantjies hopes to instil in the children at Kidzplay. For her, education is not limited to teaching children how to read, write or count, but also involves helping them understand compassion, generosity and the importance of caring for others.Jantjies expressed her appreciation to everyone who contributed to the initiative through donations, prayers and other forms of support.She hopes the outreach will not be a once-off gesture, but the beginning of further efforts to reach children and families in need.“May we continue to reach more little hearts, one meal, one pair of shoes, one smile and one act of kindness at a time,” she said.In Small Valley, the biggest takeaway was not only what the children carried home in their hands, but what they carried on their faces: smiles, moments of happiness and the feeling that someone cared enough to show up.aurelia@nmh-hub.com.na
