Walvis woman (80) found murdered in her home
Well-known Walvis Bay signwriter and artist Barbara Ruth Geschke (80) was found murdered in her home on Tuesday in the Lagoon suburb of Walvis Bay.
According to the incident report provided by the police, she was found in a pool of blood in her bedroom with open wounds.
Neighbours reported that Geschke lived alone and alerted the police after checking in on her at around 12:00 on Tuesday.
The police suspect that the murder occurred between 15:00 on Monday, 15 June, and 12:00 on Tuesday, 16 June.
Her next of kin have been informed, and the police are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the apprehension of the suspect.
Residents living in the area have been urged to check their CCTV footage for any information that could assist police in apprehending the suspects.
When asked whether a motive had been established or whether anything had been stolen from her home, the police reiterated that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
A resident living in the area recalled that Geschke had previously been the victim of break-ins at her home.
"The neighbours all chipped in to fix the windows by closing them up with wooden slats," the resident said.
News of the murder was met with shock on social media, and her living conditions were described as sparse.
One resident shared: “Why would anyone want to hurt Barbara? She never bothered anyone.”
Geschke was described as someone who "mostly kept to herself".
"She also didn't have much in her home – not even a stove or a fridge. It truly baffles me as to what this elderly woman could possibly have had, or what threat she could possibly have posed, for her to be killed in such a violent manner," a resident said.
