President set to launch Dangote tank farm

Dangote Industries Limited is advancing plans to establish a petroleum storage and distribution facility at Walvis Bay, with a regional pipeline network intended to strengthen fuel distribution across Namibia and neighbouring countries.President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is scheduled to officiate at the official launch of the Dangote Namibia Tank Farm and Regional Pipeline Project on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Remainder of Farm 58 in Walvis Bay.Alhaji Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, is also expected to attend, alongside government representatives, regional and local leaders and industry stakeholders. The project will comprise two main storage tanks for petrol and diesel, as well as two dispensing tanks. Supporting infrastructure includes a truck port and an approximately 16 km pipeline connecting the fuel jetty at the port to the tank farm.According to the project brief, the planned regional pipeline route will extend inland from Walvis Bay towards Otjiwarongo and onwards towards Rundu, with a regional connection towards Ghanzi in Botswana. The proposed pipeline network is intended to reduce Namibia's reliance on long-distance road transportation of fuel, which places pressure on road infrastructure through heavy tanker traffic and associated wear.Transporting fuel through pipelines could improve distribution efficiency while providing an alternative to road-based fuel transportation for Namibia and neighbouring Southern African markets. The project is also expected to expand the country's fuel storage and distribution capacity, strengthening supply security and reinforcing Walvis Bay's position as a gateway for regional trade.Beyond its energy infrastructure component, the development is expected to create opportunities for local suppliers, contractors, transport and logistics companies, maintenance service providers and skills development. The project also places Walvis Bay at the centre of a proposed regional distribution network, potentially supporting the movement of petroleum products beyond Namibia's borders.
