Namport backs cleaner Walvis Bay with N$2.7m donation

The Namport Social Investment Fund (NSIF) has donated a skip truck and 10 skips worth N$2.7 million to the Walvis Bay municipality to improve waste collection, sanitation and the town’s cleanliness.NSIF chairperson Amos Shiyuka handed over the equipment, describing the donation as an investment in public health, environmental protection and a cleaner town.“The need is real and the benefits are tangible to everyone,” Shiyuka said, adding that reliable skip collection could help reduce littering and illegal dumping while improving sanitation. The donation comprises a Hino 500 truck fitted with a 12-tonne skip loader, supplied by Pupkewitz Motor Division in Windhoek, and 10 heavy-duty skips manufactured by Walvis Bay-based WM Engineering. The equipment supplements two skip trucks and 40 skips already procured by the municipality. Shiyuka said the municipality had approached the fund for assistance to strengthen waste collection by providing a dedicated truck and skips at designated locations across the town.He said buying the skips locally also supported Namibian manufacturing, job creation and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. “By sourcing the skips from a local enterprise, the fund extends the value of this investment beyond the equipment itself,” he said.Shiyuka said the donation supported national priorities relating to public health, environmental sustainability and tourism, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on health, sustainable communities, responsible consumption and production, and partnerships. He urged the municipality to maintain the equipment, service the truck and loader regularly, empty the skips on time and keep proper records. He also called on businesses to support waste management through additional equipment, clean-up campaigns and partnerships with the municipality.Residents were encouraged to use designated skips correctly and avoid dumping rubbish beside them or in open spaces. “Keeping our town clean is a shared responsibility,” Shiyuka said.
