Erongo council marks progress on several fronts

The Erongo Regional Council says it made progress in improving service delivery, strengthening governance and advancing socio-economic development across the region during the past financial year.

Council chairperson Lazarus Kanelombe highlighted initiatives aimed at improving residents' lives across the region's seven constituencies in a statement at the 365th ordinary regional council meeting last week.

Kanelombe said the reporting period was marked by strategic partnerships, meaningful engagement and development projects that strengthened governance while promoting inclusive, people-centred development.

"Our collective commitment to serving the people of the Erongo region with diligence, accountability and purpose continues to deliver meaningful results," he said.

Among the key achievements was the inauguration of a N$347 000 computer laboratory in Uis with support from the Swakop Uranium Foundation.

The lab is aimed at improving access to digital learning and narrowing the technology gap for learners.

Council also participated in the official handover of delegated functions to regional councils, a move expected to strengthen decentralisation and improve service delivery.

Services, education and health

Economic empowerment remained high on the council's agenda.

Equipment was handed over to beneficiaries under the Constituency Development Fund and income-generating projects in Dâures and Swakopmund to support small businesses and create sustainable livelihoods.

Infrastructure development also featured prominently, with the council receiving a progress briefing on the construction of the Uis–Henties Bay road and participating in the launch of the NaTIS on Wheels mobile service in Omatjete, bringing licensing and vehicle registration services closer to rural communities.

On health and social development, Kanelombe highlighted the inauguration of the neonatal intensive care unit at Swakopmund District Hospital, parenting workshops, anti-tobacco awareness campaigns, employee wellness programmes and emergency relief provided to families affected by the Tutaleni fire.

Council also intensified efforts to improve education through school visits, the Erongo Regional Education Conference and the launch of technical and vocational education programmes aimed at equipping young people with relevant skills for the labour market.

While acknowledging the progress made, he stressed that more work lay ahead.

"Let us remain united in purpose, disciplined in implementation and steadfast in our commitment to improving the quality of life of every resident of the Erongo region," he said.
