Mnyupe vows to fulfil Geingob’s green hydrogen dream

Ogone Tlhage
Economic advisor to the presidency James Mnyupe has vowed to fulfil late president Hage Geingob’s green hydrogen ambitions - for Namibia to become a pioneer in the renewable energy space.

Mnyupe is also Namibia’s green hydrogen commissioner and was appointed to spearhead the country’s green hydrogen agenda under the Geingob presidency.

Reacting to how Geingob’s death would affect Namibia’s green hydrogen programme, Mnyupe said the initiative now has renewed impetus.

“We will not rest until we have delivered on the wishes and aspirations that our leaders had and continue to have for the people of this nation and their regional and global neighbours,” he said.

He also brushed off rumours that his relationship with National Planning Commission (NPC) director-general Obeth Kandjoze was rocky owing to allegations that he was not according the Green Hydrogen Council, which is led by Kandjoze, the necessary respect.

“I work closely and intimately with director-general Kandjoze and many other members of Cabinet to deliver on the aspirations of our leaders,” he said.

“I consider the director-general my older brother and I know he considers me his younger brother. The truth is, we have never been more emboldened to deliver for Namibia than we are at this very moment.”

Geingob’s last trip

Mnyupe is alleged to have travelled with Geingob to Los Angeles in the United States of America where he was expected to participate in a novel trial to treat his cancer.

The advisor dismissed insinuations that Geingob might have signed critical green hydrogen agreements while on his sick bed, following revelations last week that he signed off on the appointments of Bank of Namibia board members while he was in hospital.

“Those allegations are unfounded. President Geingob travelled to the United States to undergo medical treatment, as expressed in various press statements from the Namibian Presidency. He was not on official business and therefore did not participate in any activities pertaining to the governance of the country,” Mnyupe said.

Namibia launched its ambitious green hydrogen project in March 2021, along with the second phase of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), also a Geingob initiative.
