Law students’ donation transforms paediatric facility

Cicero and Co, a law firm run by a group of fourth-year law students from the University of Namibia (Unam), handed over a refurbished paediatric facility to the Katutura Healthcare Centre.

The facility, named the Black Chain Clinic, is valued at N$43 200, and includes vibrant art murals and essential medical equipment.

The refurbished clinic now boasts five cots, two mattresses, one stethoscope, one pulse oximeter, one blood pressure machine, three steel cabinets, two chairs and two drip stands, enhancing the centre's capacity to provide quality care to the community.

A handover ceremony took place last week, with the health ministry's acting deputy executive director Theo-Ben Kandetu expressing his gratitude for the initiative.

"We, as the ministry, are cognisant of the importance of making strategic partnerships to meet our mandate of providing access to healthcare to all, especially vulnerable groups.

“Cicero and Co is a true partner and is helping us in meeting this mandate. This kind gesture is a response to the needs of the Katutura Healthcare Centre, and we are grateful,” he said.

Work to be done

Senior charge nurse Lahja Magano Shifidi also shared her appreciation for the generous donation, saying: "The Katutura Healthcare Centre is one of the busiest facilities in Windhoek, with a catchment population of about 140 000. At the moment, the centre is operating on a 24-hour basis, catering to approximately 2 000 patients daily.

“We acknowledge that there is a lot of work to be done, and your generous donation will help us get this important work done."

Cicero and Co undertook the renovation project as part of the requirements of the LLB Legal Aid Clinic and a professional ethics course at the university.

The primary objective was to address the issue of access to adequate healthcare facilities and enhance the health of the Namibian people while upholding their human rights, the students said.
