Van Zyl's bail hearing postponed
Prominent Lüderitz businessman Erasmus ‘Poenie’ van Zyl's bail application was postponed to 28 September after he appeared in the Lüderitz Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Van Zyl stands accused of assault, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - read with the Combatting of Domestic Violence Act, for allegedly abusing his wife Elna on multiple occasions earlier this month.
Van Zyl, who owns Reich’s Pharmacy in the southern coastal town, was arrested on Monday, 11 September.
He was publicly accused by his sister-in-law Ria van der Schyff of abusing his wife.
In a social media post on 8 September, Van der Schyff said Van Zyl locked his wife out of their home, leaving her out in the cold, and severely beat her on various occasions - which led to broken bones in her right wrist.
