Teen accused of murdering grandparents denied bail
Stefanus Tangeni Shali Shiimi (19), who has been arrested and charged with the murder of his grandparents at Oniihwa B village in the Oshikoto region, made his first appearance in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Shiimi, who required an interpreter, confirmed his identity and said he understood Oshiwambo as the charges were read to him.
Magistrate Nealo Ya France informed him of his legal rights, including his right to legal representation, either by a lawyer of his choice or through state-funded legal aid.
Shiimi chose to represent himself. The magistrate reminded him of the seriousness of the charge and advised him to apply for legal aid.
State prosecutor Tony Bock told the court that the State opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and concerns that the accused might abscond if released.
“It is not in the interest of the administration of justice or the public for the accused to be released on bail,” Bock submitted.
The matter was postponed to 20 April 2026 to allow for further police investigations. The accused was remanded in custody.
Shiimi is accused of killing his grandparents, Josua Shiimi (87) and Martha Nangombe (68), on Monday morning after allegedly accusing them of bewitching him, an incident that has left the grieving Oniihwa community in shock.
