Police to arrest more suspects in Rebebe fraud case
Police have indicated that there will be more arrests in the Bank Windhoek Opuwo branch theft case masterminded by Nico Rebebe.
Rebebe, a former employee of Bank Windhoek, appeared in the Opuwo Magistrate's Court on Monday after his arrest last year.
He did not apply for bail and the court postponed the case to 24 November for further investigations.
The police told the Opuwo Magistrate's Court that investigations are ongoing into the attempted heist of N$200 million.
According to the police, more charges are likely to be added to Rebebe and there is also likely to be more arrests.
Rebebe has been in custody for 15 months while two of the 16 co-accused, Megameno Ankoshi and Rosalia Sheengala, were granted N$1 000 bail each in May last year.
The court accuses Rebebe of masterminding the theft in January 2024 when he wired money to various accounts of people, mostly cattle herders in the Kavango region.
Rebebe is said to have promised the herders jobs when he opened accounts for them and kept the ATM cards.
Some were caught after they went to Banks and wanted to withdraw large sums of cash, and after it was flagged, they got nabbed by the police.
Initially, the bank said Rebebe had taken N$200 million, but later reduced the amount to N$2 million.
Rebebe is said to have walked out of the bank carrying N$500 000 in a backpack.
