Namibian man jailed in UK for rape

A Namibian man, who was awaiting deportation from the United Kingdom, allegedly had sex with a woman as she slept following a drunken night out, a court in that country has heard.The victim awoke to find Vetondouua Kariua having sex with her on 23 October 2021.Kariua (27) was convicted of rape after a relatively short period of deliberation, Cornwall Live reports.During the trial, barrister Nigel Wraith described that the victim was drinking with a friend in a seaside village before they got a lift to the city of Truro to carry on the night.They went to two bars - Bunters and Vanilla - and the victim described being a “nine out of 10” on the drunk scale. It was there Kariua was out with a friend and he and the victim began dancing and flirting.CCTV outside Vanilla showed them chatting and holding hands and the victim and her friend then went to where Kariua was staying. Her friend later left, as he had work in the morning.‘Begged him to stop’Wraith said: "The complainant remembers waking up, finding herself naked from the waist down and lying down in the bed with Kariua on top of her having sex with her. She told him to stop but he didn&#039;t and carried on having sex with her. She begged him to stop and felt pinned down, leaving her unable to move."He carried on for a while and then stopped. She made her excuses, retrieved her clothing and left his home."The victim, who was crying and shaking at the time, was then picked up by her dad.Kariua sent her the following text messages after the incident: “Text me when you&#039;re home please, sorry you had to leave” and “good morning beautiful, hope you arrived safe”.Failed asylum-seeker Kariua, who was awaiting deportation, handed himself in at a police station in Gloucester a few days later. He denied having sex with the victim, despite traces of his DNA being found on a swab.Sex offenderDuring sentencing, judge Simon Carr said: "The effect on [the victim] has been dramatic. She has gone from a confident, professional woman to someone who rarely goes out. She struggles to form relationships as she fears a breach of trust."She thought she met someone she was safe with, but this couldn&#039;t have been further from the truth".Kariua was jailed for seven years and must sign the sex offenders&#039; register for life.- SomersetLive
