WindhoekOn the second day of his bail application in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday, medical doctor Fillemon ‘Fly’ Nakanduungile (39) confirmed communicating with Abner Mateus, the alleged mastermind behind the brutal 17 October attack on Ondangwa-based prosecutor Justine Shiweda — on the day of the attack.

Mateus, Nakanduungile told the court, confirmed that the attack was linked to a failed N$100 000 bribe attempt.

It was also stated in court that a white VW Polo sedan — allegedly used in the ambush — and a bag containing firearms tied to the shooting had been hidden at Nakanduungile’s residence. The vehicle and weapons are key pieces of evidence in the investigation into the violent assault on Shiweda, who was shot in the legs and doused with a corrosive mixture of hydrochloric and sulphuric acid at her home, in front of her children.

Shiweda’s condition has deteriorated in recent days, sources told Namibian Sun.

The attack is widely believed to be linked to a collapsed bail negotiation for Mateus, a former police officer accused of running a large criminal network from behind bars. Investigators say Mateus allegedly promised a bribe of N$100 000 to Shiweda to secure her support for his bail — but the message, and the money, allegedly never reached her, leading to perceptions that she double-crossed the influential crime boss.

Nakanduungile admitted in court that, on the day of the attack, he had communicated with Mateus during a conference call that reportedly also involved another accused, identified only as Manne. During the call, Mateus allegedly insisted that Shiweda was targeted because of the failed bribe.

Namibian Sun earlier reported that the N$100 000 allegedly meant for Shiweda was channeled through an intermediary who falsely claimed to Mateus that the money had been delivered, even though the prosecutor never received it. When Shiweda unexpectedly refused bail, that purported deception is believed to have enraged Mateus and triggered the attack.

Nakanduungile’s lawyer, Smart Elago, also elicited testimony confirming that the doctor personally knows Mateus — describing him as one of his patients. The case continues as the court considers whether to grant Nakanduungile bail amid growing scrutiny of how the sedan, firearms and alleged bribe-linked planning converged on his property.
