Mutero convicted of double murder
A 53-year-old man was on Tuesday convicted of the 2015 double murder of his wife and son.
In the Oshakati High Court, Justice Duard Kesslau found Mbangu Vensislaus Mutero guilty of murdering his wife, Rosalie Shirenga Shitjoni, and his seven-year-old son, Aleksus Vipanda, whom he shot and killed on 25 September 2015 at Ndiyona village.
According to court documents, Mutero’s late wife was seven months pregnant at the time.
The matter has been postponed to 10 November when the State will call a witness to the stand to lead evidence for sentence aggravation.
The date for sentence mitigation will then be set, where the court will determine a sentence suitable for the convict.
Toxic relationship
Namibian Sun has established that Mutero shot and killed his wife out of jealousy, and that the couple were in a toxic relationship marred by constant fighting.
This publication has been reliably informed that on the fateful day, a sports tournament was hosted in Ndiyona, where Shitjoni was working as a vendor selling food and drinks.
It is alleged that Mutero saw Shitjoni serving food to an ex-partner, which enraged him and led to a heated argument.
“He saw his wife serving an ex at the field and he ordered her to go home. While at home, he shot her. The son was in the other room and after hearing the gunshots, the boy came out and ran to his father, who then shot him in the head,” the source revealed.
Mutero subsequently handed himself over to the police.
Culpable homicide
After several attempts, Mutero was granted bail of N$5 000 on 1 October 2018.
However, while on bail, he found himself on the wrong side of the law once again when he, on 30 December 2019, hit a family of four with his car.
The incident took place at around 21:00 at Rundu’s Ndama location on the Trans-Zambezi highway when the family was trying to cross the road.
Three of the victims - Petrus Kongo Haingura (44), Muhafereni Patricia Musinga Haingura (38) and Belindine Kasiku Haingura (1) - died on the spot, while five-year-old Phillip Poroto Haingura later succumbed to his injuries at the Rundu State Hospital.
Mutero fled the scene and hid the vehicle in bushes about a kilometre from where the accident took place.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with culpable homicide.
This case has not been concluded yet. Namibian Sun understands the matter will be heard next week.
