Man kills granddad in suspected muti attack
Suspects flee to Angola
The deceased's wife was also shot, sustaining a bullet wound to her left thigh, but survived the ordeal.
One of two suspects linked to the murder of an 84-year-old man is the deceased’s 30-year-old grandson.
Kandere Shinkanda was arrested in Angola on Monday, while the second suspect - Linyando Murayi (38), a self-proclaimed traditional healer – handed himself over to the Namibian Police on Tuesday.
The deceased, Mbambi Shinkanda, was shot and killed while having dinner with his wife Annarosa Kashova Mungenga (92) at Mabushe village in the Kavango East Region on Monday, 11 September.
Mungenga was also shot, sustaining a bullet wound to her left thigh, but she survived.
Details still remain sketchy on what led to the murder and attempted murder, with a manhunt after the shooting leading to the suspects’ arrests several days later.
Shinkanda was arrested in Angola this week after he fled to that country last Friday. Angolan authorities played a role in his arrest.
Murayi (38) also fled to Angola the day after the incident, on 12 September, but returned to his village a few days later. The police were informed about his return, but before they could pounce, he handed himself over on Tuesday and was subsequently arrested.
The motive for the murder and attempted murder has not been established yet.
Assault rifle
According to the police, the alleged murder weapon – an AK47 automatic assault rifle and seven rounds of ammunition – were confiscated during the arrests.
The suspects appeared before Magistrate Selma Shiiga at the Ndiyona Periodic Court yesterday.
They were denied bail and the matter was remanded to 16 January 2024 for further police investigations and for the suspects to acquire legal representation.
