Madisia's 'moment of weakness' with Wasserfall’s boyfriend

Murder accused Azaan Madisia yesterday told the court that she was in a sexual relationship with Shannon 'Darlikie' Wasserfall’s boyfriend. Madisia stands accused of killing Wasserfall and hiding her body in a shallow grave.

During the murder trial - in which she and her brother Steven Mulundu are accused in the murder - Madisia took the witness stand and presented her version of events before the court.

According to her, she and Wasserfall's boyfriend, Petrus ‘Peter’ Shoopala, had a relationship of a sexual nature while he was in a romantic relationship with Wasserfall.

She testified that Shoopala put an end to their trysts, saying he would like to try to work on his relationship with Wasserfall.

"I supported him and was quite happy that he made a decision about what he wanted to do," she testified before judge Christie Liebenberg.

Madisia described having sex with Shoopala in February 2020 as "a moment of weakness".

She further told the court that she never told Wasserfall about her sexual encounters with Shoopala because it would be "humiliating".

She also argued that she believed Shoopala should have dealt with it.

‘Darlikie, don’t joke’

Madisia testified about her final encounter with Wasserfall, which allegedly led to her death. According to the accused, she and Wasserfall were hanging out that day and both had strawberry liqueur and later switched to wine.

The defendant testified that she later suggested that she take Wasserfall home.

“She looked pretty upset. I asked her what was wrong and she asked why things had to be like this. She said she always had to be the one who had to do things and stay at home.”

Madisia testified that Wasserfall asked why Shoopala looked at her with admiration.

"I told her 'let's not do this now' - it was late, we had both been drinking and I had to take her home," she said.

According to Madisia, Wasserfall had a wine bottle in her hand and when she tried to take it from her, the other woman apparently pulled back and became irritated. Madisia testified that Wasserfall then pushed her.

She said they pushed each other several times before she pushed Wasserfall over the bed in her room one last time and the other woman hit her head.

"I thought she was joking. I told her 'Darlikie, don't joke'. I felt her pulse, but I couldn't feel anything. I held two fingers under her nose to check if she was breathing, but I couldn't feel her breath."

Racked with guilt

Madisia testified that she developed feelings of guilt after the incident and this led to messages she sent to several people, including Shoopala, which led them to the shallow grave in which Madisia and Mulundu apparently buried Wasserfall.

"I kept seeing images of what happened in my head. I looked at Junior [Wasserfall's son] and kept thinking that his mother was no longer there. I knew her parents were wondering about what had happened to their child and I thought about how my parents would have felt if it had been the other way around," Madisia testified.

Her legal representative, Albert Titus, is expected to continue with questioning today before the State begins cross-examination.
