Father, son plead not guilty in family murder case
A father and son, accused of murdering Carlos le Roux (24) – their son and brother, respectively – pleaded not guilty in the Windhoek High Court this week.
Borris le Roux (59) allegedly killed his son Carlos, with the help of his eldest son and now co-accused, Hendrik le Roux (27), in April 2021 at their home in Takarania, Mariental.
The State argues that Borris and Hendrik assaulted Carlos with broomsticks and pipes. He allegedly died from a blow to the head that caused internal bleeding.
According to information revealed during the two men's bail application, Carlos reportedly struggled with mental health issues, which meant he was unable to work. He was also said to have been receiving a government grant.
Trial begins
According to the indictment, Carlos allegedly attacked the family's house with stones on the evening of 8 April 2021, damaging four windows. He died in the early hours of 9 April 2021.
Borris allegedly called the police that morning and said he had assaulted his son, after which police officers visited the house and found Carlos's battered body in a room.
Both accused pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and assault with aggravating circumstances before judge Philanda Christiaan.
Although Borris and Hendrik did not provide a plea explanation to the court this week, they argued during a previous bail application that they had killed Carlos in self-defence.
During this week’s proceedings, Borris and Hendrik exercised their right to remain silent, placing the burden on the State to prove the charges against them.
After their not guilty plea was recorded, the State called its first witnesses.
The trial continues today.
