Chinatown naked stripping case heads to mediation

A civil court case between a former Chinatown employee and her boss has been postponed to next month for mediation.Chinese businessman Li Bailong filed a counter-suit of N$500 000 against former employee Itakeya George, who accused him of stripping her naked in full view of co-workers and customers.According to a court order dated 5 May, the two parties - represented by their legal representatives - will meet in chambers on 9 June. George is represented by Henry Shimutwikeni, while Li is represented by Ileni Velikoshi.George approached the High Court earlier this year to sue her former boss for N$500 000 for the alleged humiliation she suffered following the event of 6 November 2021 when she was allegedly ordered to remove her uniform in full view of co-workers and customers at Li’s fabric store in Windhoek’s Chinatown.He, however, made a counterclaim, arguing that his reputation has been tarnished by allegations George made on various media platforms.‘False and defamatory’Li said the "false and defamatory accusations" painted a picture of him being selfish, cruel and vindictive in nature, and makes him seem to not be a law-abiding Chinese national, but rather a criminal who lacks moral fibre.“The falsehoods, statements, innuendos and distortion of facts are injurious to the dignity of the defendant and were made and circulated and published with the sole purpose and intention to damage and harm the reputation and dignity of defendant and by extension his business in the eyes of the Namibian community and abroad,” Li’s legal team argued.“As a result of the publication and circulation of the above false suggestions, insinuations and defamatory statements by the plaintiff and the context in which they were made, [the] defendant suffered damages to his reputation and dignity in the sum of N$500 000.”Criminal case withdrawnLi also provided a court order dated 25 January, which indicated that the criminal case against him had been withdrawn by the State.According to the order, Prosecutor Arric Albertus Husselmann approached the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court with an application to withdraw the matter.Magistrate Dawid Mukuyu subsequently granted the application, and the case was dismissed.Li was subsequently refunded his N$1 000 bail money.kenya@namibiansun.com
