World population reaches 8 billion
The world population reached the 8 billion mark today, according to the live world statistics site Worldometer.
As of 2022, the world population is growing at a rate of around 0.84% per year (down from 1.05% in 2020, 1.08% in 2019, 1.10% in 2018, and 1.12% in 2017).
The current population increase is estimated at 67 million people per year.
The annual growth rate reached its peak in the late 1960s, when it was around 2%.
The rate of increase has nearly halved since then, and will continue to decline in the coming years.
What appears to be a celebration is actually a significant burden on the planet.
The number of inhabitants on planet Earth in the year 1804 amounted to one billion people, and it took 170 years for the population to grow to four billion in 1974 – a total population growth of 400%.
Only 48 years later, that number has doubled, now standing at eight billion people: 8,000,000,000.
