Namibia eyes stronger agricultural ties with Netherlands

Namibia is seeking to strengthen cooperation with the Netherlands in agriculture, water management, trade and investment as part of efforts to boost food security and drive economic transformation.This was highlighted by Namibia's ambassador to the European Union and the Netherlands, Dr Alfredo Hengari, after presenting his letters of credence to King Willem-Alexander in The Hague last week.Hengari said the Netherlands, the world's second-largest exporter of agricultural products by value after the United States, offers valuable lessons for Namibia as it seeks to unlock the full potential of its agricultural sector."President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has made it clear that agriculture is central to Namibia's development agenda and food security ambitions," he said.He said Namibia aims to deepen cooperation in areas such as precision farming, agroforestry, greenhouse technology, sustainable water management and agricultural digitalisation.The embassy plans to actively engage Dutch government institutions, private sector companies, research centres and universities to promote investment, knowledge transfer, capacity building and technological innovation.Hengari also pointed to opportunities for collaboration in water infrastructure and management, noting that Namibia can benefit from Dutch expertise as it seeks to address water scarcity and position itself as a regional centre of excellence in water governance.Beyond agriculture, the ambassador said Namibia is exploring partnerships in sports, science and cultural exchanges.phillipus@nmh-hub.com.na
