Geingob highlights regional security at Troika Summit
Diplomatic leaders from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) gathered in Luanda, Angola, yesterday to kick off the Ordinary Organ Troika Summit.
The event saw President Hage Geingob - who is the chairperson of the SADC organ on politics, defence and security cooperation – stressing the importance of regional stability and cooperation.
He underscored that "peace and security are indeed necessary preconditions and key enablers of regional integration and development".
He further expressed gratitude to the attending leaders for their unwavering dedication to the consolidation of peace and security within the SADC region.
Taking stock of recent developments, Geingob highlighted the pressing need for three Extraordinary Organ Troika Summits since the last gathering in August 2022. These summits were prompted by the "presence of armed and terrorist groups, notably in the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC] and the Republic of Mozambique", he said, outlining the urgency of addressing the security challenges impacting these member states.
Collective efforts
During his address, Geingob also acknowledged the progress made over the past year, lauding the collective efforts to silence guns as part of Agenda 2063.
He commended the region's strides in minimising conflict and sustaining peace.
He also illuminated the outcome of directives issued during the January Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit, revealing that it led to the convening of a Tripartite Summit involving pertinent regional stakeholders with a vested interest in bolstering peace efforts in eastern DRC.
The subsequent Quadripartite Summit in June reinforced the call for "strengthened harmonisation and coordination between existing peace interventions", he said.
As the summit continues, delegates are expected to delve into an array of security, cooperation and development topics.
