COSTLY AFFAIR

COSTLY AFFAIR: The two-day Nato summit which took place in The Hague this week was the most expensive Nato summit in history, according to local Dutch newspaper AD. The summit would cost an estimated 183.4 million euros, the publication reported. Calculated on the time that the world leaders are actually meeting, that came down to just over 1 million euros per minute. To ensure the safety of world leaders, The Hague also underwent a massive transformation.

The Johan de Wittlaan, which connects Scheveningen to the Hubertustunnel and the A44 towards Amsterdam, has been closed since April. Temporary offices were constructed on the roadway for delegates, and trees, street lights and traffic lights were removed. Some 100 000 air travellers faced cancellations or other disruptions travelling to and from Schiphol airport this month. Security was also unprecedented, with some 27 000 police officers (nearly half of the Dutch police force) deployed in what was called the largest security operation in the Netherlands’ history. Over 10 000 military personnel were deployed, supported by air defence systems, fighter jets, and naval vessels.
