SHORT: Katima Mulilo modernises wastewater treatment system
Urban development minister James Sankwasa said Katima Mulilo Town Council should prioritise the well-being of its residents when it comes to essential services.
Sankwasa made these remarks last week during the groundbreaking ceremony for a N$490 million water treatment system.
Katima Mulilo’s sewage system, designed for only 500 people, has struggled to keep up with a growing population of nearly 50 000.
Sankwasa said the government is committed to funding projects to improve the residents' quality of life.
Katima Mulilo Mayor John Ntemwa said the town’s wastewater infrastructure was being overhauled.
Ntemwa noted that the project would help address the severe challenges of the current sewer system, which has been a burden for over 25 years.
The project, under the urban development ministry and contractor Fullbright Water, will include the construction of an advanced activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, refurbishing 23 pump stations, and upgrading the existing sewer network.
The first phase slated for completion by August 2026.
